If you’ve already read my review about Christina Henry’s Alice you know how much I loved that book! When I discovered that she’d written a sequel, The Red Queen this went straight to the top of my TBR pile.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t as taken by this book as the first one. It’s not that it was bad, or that I didn’t enjoy. Compared to Alice, which is such a different take on the original tale and that was so dark and creepy that this one didn’t live up to my expectations.
I thought that the relationship between Alice and Hatch developed in an interesting way. The two Queens also had a spin to them. It wasn’t the typical idea that I’ve seen of the character before. But overall I can’t say it was my favorite book. I much prefer the first. As I said, I find it a much more compelling read. The Red Queen felt as if Henry had taken a safer approach to the story than Alice.
However, this won’t put me off reading her other books. I have a great love for anything that is fairy tale related, especially if it’s putting a spin on the tale.
